FARMINGTON – Chris Stewart, candidate for the Second Congressional District, sharply criticized the United States Senate for failing to govern in accordance with the law and pass a budget. He called the budget proposal from the President “unserious.” He also bemoaned decisions by Majority Leader Harry Reid to avoid a vote on a budget as political and outrageously irresponsible.
“Budgeting is the fundamental responsibility of Congress, yet for 1020 days the Senate – under the leadership of Harry Reid – has shirked its primary responsibility by deferring to tenured bureaucrats in the administration to determine the amount of taxpayer money they want to spend,” said Stewart. “So far adding up to 4 trillion dollars for 2012, of which 1.33 trillion dollars will be borrowed.”
While clarifying his comments about the budget, Stewart said, “Any business would be in shambles without the restraints that a budget imposes. As a person who grew up on a farm, I learned from my father the reality of responsible budgeting. Without one, there’s simply no way to remain solvent.” Stewart continued, “From the beginning of the Obama administration, spending by the United States government has so far yielded a deficit increase of $4.72 trillion and will climb to over $6 trillion by the end of the year. It could not be any clearer that this trajectory is on the path to insolvency.”
Stewart blasted Harry Reid’s decision not to bring a budget to the floor for a vote as “outrageously irresponsible and politically driven to help ensure Democrats will not be forced to vote on an agenda of the White House.” He called on the Senate to pass a budget saying, “It’s time to live within our means. It’s time for the Senate to continue the work already completed by the House and pass a budget and live up to its constitutional duty. A budget, a real one, is the only sensible course of action. It’s time for restraint. It’s time for accountability.”
